Is milk healthy for people?
By Taylor C.
Do you think milk is healthy for you? Well, think again. Thomas Campbell (co-author of The China Study) stated, a large study in Sweden found that women consuming more than three glasses of milk a day had almost twice the mortality rate of 20 years compared to those women consuming less than one glass a day. In addition, the high milk-drinkers did not have improved bone health. In fact, they had more fractures, particularly hip fractures. Higher dairy intake has been linked to several cancers, lack of focus, acne, and weight gain (that’s why it’s fed to baby calves and humans so they can obtain a healthy weight and body fat). D-galactose and Casein (the protein found in milk) play a role in triggering type 1 diabetes through a process called molecular mimicry. Also, milk is the most common self-reported food allergen in the world. These are some of the reasons milk is unhealthy for people. In fact, almond and coconut milk as well as veggies have twice the amount. It is important for people to watch their intake and be wise about food consumption.

New Furniture in the Library
By Casey D.
Right before winter break, the library got new furniture. The new furniture will allow the library to be a comfortable work-space and a great place to collaborate as well as independently work. Thank you to the staff that put this together and installed the project. The furniture is a great investment for the school and it will be a fantastic working environment. The table formation will allow the students to work well together.

Dear Marissa,
Please help! I have been having some problems with money lately. I always end up running out and not being able to do much with my friends. My mom said I should try to get a job but I haven't been able to find anything! Any help?
~Broke Beggar
Dear Broke Beggar,
Having money saved up is hard for many people. A babysitting job is a good job for a teenager if that is an available opportunity for you. If you go to the Red Cross website, you can sign up for a babysitting class. It does cost some money, but you can learn some things and become a certified babysitter. Hope this helps!

Dear Marissa,
I had just bought a new laptop and while my sister is free to use it, it was my money that was used for the purchase. The only problem is she has been taking it out without asking me and making it appear as if she owned it. I really don't want to offend her, but I want to hide it from her so she doesn't take it. What do you think I should do?
~Upset User
Dear Upset User,
Just tell her! Im sure she doesnt know how much it bothers you that shes taking it. Try to get it so that you can be nice and still make sure she understands how much it bothers you. I understand how annoying it can be when your things "disappear" and then magically returned to where it was when you complain. Good Luck!

Dear Marissa,
My parents are really into sports. They come to all my games and expect me to be MVP for every single game. It's a lot of pressure and sometimes it's too much. Its really hard to handle all the pressure but I dont want to say anything to my parents because they may get upset. What should I do?
~Pressured MVP
Dear Pressured MVP,
Don't let the stress get to you! You should tell your parents. They aren't mind readers and sometimes don't know how stressed you are. I sure they will understand that you still want them to cheer for you, just to not to pressure you so much. I'm sure they will understand. I hope this helped!

Dear Marissa,
Thanksgiving is this week and I already know that for the first 3 hours its going to be nothing but boring. My parents invite so many people that aren't even family! I want to bring my laptop with me so I have something to do but I'm not sure if I should or if I even can! Any Advice?
~Internet Surfer
Dear Internet Surfer,
Thanksgiving is a time for thanks and I sure am thankful for all my technology, but there are some times that having your laptop, phon, or ipod with you isn't such a good idea. For Thanksgiving, bringing your laptop is OK, but make sure you don't use it a lot of the time. You want to make sure to talk to people as well! Maybe while everyone is cooking, you can use it but once dinner is ready make sure to put it away! Hope this helped!

Does the Environment affect your learning?
By: Casey D.
Everyone has a different way of learning. Some learn visually, some, hands-on, and by listening. The environment that surround someone definitely affects their learning.
Many need a silenced environment in order to get a full productive learning experience. A student requires a nice place to learn and get a good grade in school. Right now, a good rule is that you have to be silent. With a good environment one can learn better.

Dear Marissa,
I have a hard time staying focused whenever I use my chromebook. I always start on-task and then I end up on some random game! Whenever I take a test, I have to read the question so many times just so that I can somewhat understand what it’s asking! I heard one of the EOG’s might be on our chromebooks, and I don’t think I’ll do very well.
~Distracted Gamer
Distracted Gamer,
I completely understand! It’s so hard to stay on task when you have so many games to play. Many also have the same issue. I actually started writing things out so that I don't spend so much time on my chromebook. Try going home and spending time on your computer and reading things. The more time you spend getting used to focusing on a page, the more you are able to focus when it comes down to it. Don't stress! Make sure that during class, you focus on the material at rather than playing games. Hope this helps!

Marissa,
I have a big problem. My parents a getting a divorce. Sometimes it feels like it’s somehow my fault. I’m worried how this is going to affect my life. My mom says everything will be the same, but my dad won’t live with us. My mom will have to get a full-time job and I’ll have to be at home alone. I’m worried we may move. Please help!
~Autophobic (Fear of Divorce)
Autophobic,
Don’t feel like it’s your fault! When your parents get a divorce, it just means that they don’t feel like it’s the best idea to stay together. There are always people to talk to. If it gets too much to handle, talk to the counselor. They are always here to talk and they have great advice. Make sure you tell your parents how much you love them because this is stressful for them too. Make sure you tell your parents your fears. Moving isn’t bad. Sometimes it may mean getting a fresh start. Hope this helps!

Marissa,
My grades in the 1st quarter were good, but 2nd quarter has just started and my grades have already started to go down! I had and A-B average in all my classes, but most of my grades are already C’s. If this is just 2nd quarter and it’s going to get harder, how do I keep up!? I really want to have this year be a good one and have good grades but I don’t see how I can if my grades don’t start going up. Any advice?
~Grade Diver
Grade Diver,
Welcome to the world of grades. Don't worry, you aren't doing anything wrong. One day you have a really great grade, and then the next day it plummets and is now a grade you never want to show anyone. It's not you. It's the concepts. They ARE getting harder. Try going to tutoring for topics you don’t understand. Check on Power School and make sure you aren’t missing any assignments. If so, ask your teachers what happened. Adjust the time you spend on the topics. You may usually spend only 10 minutes on math, but find that now you should spend at least 30. Don't be afraid to have to adjust. There's an app for that, called Focus Booster! Ask your teachers if there’s anything you can do to raise your grades. They are here to help! Good luck!

Should there be an especially early curfew for Halloween pranksters on Halloween?
By: Savannah B.
Halloween is a fun and exciting holiday for everyone. No matter if they are 3 or 16, it brings joy and excitement. Many people enjoy the holiday because of the candy and the of the parties. The issue is, some people may think that the best part about Halloween is the pranking, which often out of hand. This is why there should be an especially early curfew on Halloween.
The idea of Halloween is different for everyone. For some people Halloween is their favorite holiday and they are upset when it is over. Others think that it is awesome because of all of the candy that they receive when you go trick or treating. There are others who like the trick and love to trick people no matter their age.
As some may think of it as a joke, the people getting pranked on think of it as mean, foolish, or sometimes even cruel. Getting pranked on after going through a long day you might get a little frustrated when every hour there is an egg hitting your door or a ring at your doorbell but no one there. This is the reason that the curfew needs to be earlier on Halloween. A reasonable time would be 9 or 10 and if you wanted to stay out later you would need adult supervision. With this lowering of the curfew many people would be relieved because they would not have to get up on November 1st and clean up all of the toilet paper that some irresponsible people put out. Halloween is a holiday that is not just for kids. Everyone should be able to enjoy it. One more question…..TRICK OR TREAT?!

Hi. 10/15/15
I’m a sixth grader and I’m still not fully used to all of the new things I have to do. Middle school is much harder than Elementary. There's more homework, the classes are harder, and my friends are turning their back on me as if I never knew them! Do you have an advice for someone trying to find their way in middle school?
~Sixth Grade Newbie
Dear Sixth Grade Newbie,
Been there, done that. Sixth grade isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Don’t worry. You’ll find your way. The homework problem will get better, I promise. If you need help you can go to tutoring (Tutoring schedules will be posted in SCMS news tab). And your “friends” that are turning their back on you? Don’t worry. Sometimes you have to adapt and try to make some new friends. Try to meet the new people in your class. Find someone with the same interests as you. Chances are they may be having the same problem as you. That girl that talks to you during lunch? Try talking to her. And don't forget that no matter what you aren’t alone. There's always someone there to talk to. Good Luck!

Is Student Safety Jeopardized?
by Casey D.
Right now there are school buses that are crammed over the max. It only takes one bad turn or crash to injure many innocent students. I think, as do many parents with, buses need to be less full for a safe ride home.
The difference between a car ride home and a bus ride home is that a bus has loads more people. In a completely full bus there is less room to sit down and there will be people in the isle. Oaptonline.org mentions that when students are hunched over the seat, in the isle, the bus is at overcapacity. It is also not acceptable to let students sit on each other’s laps to make space. This practice puts the students at great danger in the event of a collision, also said by oaptonline.org. Therefore students should have there own space to sit in order to be safe.
On many buses, people are sitting in the isles on their backpacks. This is also very dangerous because in an event of a crash or a dangerous situation in the bus, they will be position where the student could get injured badly, and by chance, death. Buses that have too many people in it need to be separated into different buses.
Buses that have too many students need to have less people in at a time. It is dangerous to have students in the isle and hunched over the seat. Students can be in danger to get injured badly in an overflowed buses. Students need a safe ride home. Buses need to be less cramped.

Hi Marissa,
Lately I have been having some problems with my time management. I play sports and have a ton of homework. I can never find the time to get it all done. I don’t want to have to drop the sport I play because my grades go down as the result of me not finishing my homework, but if I can’t figure out a way to manage them both I may have to! Please help!
~Sporty Slacker
Hey Sporty Slacker,
Time management is tough. Especially if you have to balance homework with sports and other after school activities. There are apps that help you with procrastination such as Focus Booster. This app helps you by putting a timer into how much time you take to do everything and eases the stress of doing it yourself. Try making a schedule with your parents for the time you have when you get home. For instance give yourself 15-20 minutes to rest and cool off after you get back from sports. Then give yourself time to have each portion of your homework, possibly 45 minutes or so a subject. Don’t forget to always give yourself some time to take a break, or you may get overwhelmed! Hope this helped!

School Start Times
by Casey D.
School start times are important to make sure you receive a full school experience. People have extra curricular activities right after school and already go to bed late because of homework, therefore school start times should stay the same.
Extra curricular activities could be affected if school start times are later. According to the Public Agenda, 57% of students have non-school activities on school and non-school days. If school starts later, it ends later, and if people already have sports or music lessons right after school, it just won’t work out. Adding on to that, students have to do other school assignments, like homework, projects, and studying which will make people go to sleep later.
Having school start later creates a risk of going to bed late. According to sleepfoundation.org, only 15% if teenagers get 8 or more hours of sleep. Some may argue that if they just give less homework, that that will help, but that will not allow us to get where we need to be with our learning.
School start times need to stay the same. If it stays the same, students will get their homework done at a more reasonable time, rather than later and get more sleep. Before you complain that school starts too early, think about the drawbacks.

Marissa,
Halloween is this weekend and I’m not sure if I should go or not. Some of my friends are, but they aren’t going full out and dressing up like they used to. Some of my other friends say they are too old and are making fun of me for wanting to. Should I not dress up and go with my friends who are going or not go at all and stay home? Should I dress up and go by myself?
~Halloween Nightmare
Dear Halloween Nightmare,
Be you! If you like getting your Halloween on and going all out, go for it! Let your inner superhero shine! Find someone who is also dressing up and go with them. Not everyone thinks you’re too old for Halloween. You may end up having more fun than staying home. Halloween is supposed to be fun! Don’t let other people’s opinions change your mind. Enjoy and don’t forget to be you!

Do Children Need Supervision on Halloween
By: Casey D.
On Halloween, children look forward to going door to door in the neighborhood to get loads of candy. When they go around they also gain a little bit of freedom. As great this is in the children's eyes, there are many dangers of going around unsupervised. Children shouldn’t go out unsupervised at night.
With children on the streets, cars are be a big danger. According to statisticbrain.com 35% throw or attend a party. Many parties involve alcohol and drinking. If those people are on the roads, it could be dangerous if there is no supervision. Some people argue that it would be no fun if adults are there, but if anyone was to be hurt, they would be in greater danger if there are no adults to assist them. According to WTSP, Halloween is in the top 3 days for deaths of pedestrians. When you are out trick-or-treating, make sure you have supervision and be safe.
