Panther's Day
By Taylor C.
The Panther’s have been on fire this year with their dedication and teamwork. What better way to celebrate than to have a Panther’s day at school on January 15th, 2016. Wear your Panthers gear to get awards. People in best Panthers attire will potentially be awarded in the hallways. Staff with carts will be in the hallways handing out gifts. Blue or black color t-shirts, jerseys, caps (in the hallways only), and other appropriate Panthers attire will be allowed. So Panthers fans get ready to have a day full of spirit and excitement.

Plus, we take a guided City Tour of Historic Charleston, as well as a guided ghost tour on Thursday Night. Lydia McCarty an 8th grade student says “I’m excited to go to the aquarium and go on the ghost tour.” “I think it would be a good opportunity to learn about South Carolina’s former history and a good chance to grow our friendships,” says Savannah Burroughs who is also an 8th grader. Hopefully all students will be able to attend this wonderful trip.

Orchestra Concert
By Erica B.
The orchestra concert on December 9th was a wonderful experience for friends and family of the South Charlotte players. “It was scary but then once we got through it it was fun.” said cello player, Natalie Daza. Her favorite part was their last song, because it was fast and entertaining, as well as fun to play. The orchestra concert had a great turnout, including former assistant e.c., Eric Jackson. “It was great to see him, and we took some pictures.” says Mrs. Guthrie, regarding Mr. Jackson.

Honors Dance Performance
By Bayleigh H. and Hailey C.
There is an upcoming dance performance on Wednesday, January 13th; it will take place in the cafetorium at 7:00 p.m. The focus of the dances is to showcase all the hard work that the students have done throughout the semester. There is a wide variety of dances including ballet, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, pointe, and modern. Small groups, solos, duets, trios, as well as large groups will be featured.
In the small group numbers, students have full creative freedom. They have criteria based on song choice, length, and performance qualities. But, the choreographic design is entirely up to them. Dance isn’t just to entertain people, it is also so the students can send a message to your audience. Ms. Butler wants people to know that, “Honors Dance is a place for people who truly love the art of dance. The goal is for the audience to see how talented each student is in their own way.” You don’t need to have a ticket to get in. Come and support The Shockers!

Mock Trials in 8th Grade
By Bayleigh H.
On December 1st and December 2nd 8th grade students participated in a Mock Trial based on the story “A Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe. In the story, an elderly man was murdered by the narrator of the story, as it was written in first person. The narrator committed the crime to rid himself of the man's 'evil eye.
The 8th grade students were debating on whether the narrator was insane or sane at the time of the murder. The defense teams are trying to convince the jury of the narrator's insanity, pleading innocent due to insanity. The prosecution is arguing that he was sane at the occurrence of the murder. There are an abundance of jobs for all students, including stenographer, judge, the prosecution team, the defense team, reporters, journalists, the jury and the bailiff. The final results were that two classes had a mistrial, three were in favor of the prosecution and one for the defense. Good job to all the 8th graders!

90,00 Acts of Kindness
By Bayleigh H. and Hailey C.
The South Charlotte Way is doing the right thing all day everyday. Starting this year we are focusing on kindness and different ways to be kind. There is a new challenge called 90,000 Acts of Kindness. Students at South Charlotte are supposed to send in different ways they show kindness. The student out of everyone in the school, who shows the most acts of kindness wins a grand prize. Anybody can submit a response, even your teacher! The link to submit a response is down below. If every student sends in just 1 response per day, we could easily hit our goal of 90,000. Just remember to BE KIND.

Library Update
By Hailey C.
Have you ever felt uncomfortable sitting on the chairs in the library? Well good news, the library is getting updated! They are getting all new tables that can roll around and are shaped like pieces of puzzles. The library is also getting new chairs which are ergonomic which means they are very comfortable. We are also getting hokki stools that rock! The new colors of the chair will be a light blue to match the library. Theses new furniture pieces will help the students work more in groups, the students will be more comfortable and will have a more flexible learning space by getting things like rolling tables. This should be done by the second week of December.

Project Lead the Way
By: Hailey C. and Bayleigh H.
Starting this year, South Charlotte Middle School has introduced a new program called Project Lead the Way, lead by Ms. Williams. Project Lead the Way is a national nonprofit organization that is "leading the way" in STEM education. Ms. Williams brought the program to SCMS and enjoys being a part of it.
“I have always been passionate about STEM education and its hands-on approach to learning. After teaching 8th grade science, I really felt that students needed an opportunity to truly apply what they're learning in a real-world way and PLTW provides that opportunity to students.”, said Ms. Williams.
PLTW is an activity, project, and problem-based classroom where students are challenged daily to think creatively and collaboratively. Students learn a variety of engineering skills and are then presented a problem or challenge that requires them to apply that skill in the real world. Students learn the importance of thinking both independently and collaboratively and develop strong problem-solving skills.
Ms. Williams hopes her students will become inspired to pursue STEM education beyond her classroom and use their knowledge to better the world around them. Many students at SCMS are taking this program and lots of them are learning things they never knew before.
Nathan Skudlarick, an 8th grader who takes this elective says, “PLTW is a great way to get introduced to the world of technology engineering.“ If you’re a 6th or 7th grader interested in design and modeling and robotics then next year you should try Project Lead the Way.

Kindness Campaign
by Anna Barnett
This year South Charlotte Middle School is going to improve its “Kindness Campaign.” This campaign is an initiative that SCMS students and staff promote to make sure everyone is treated kindly all school year. The committee, which consists of eighth grade students and their advisor Mr. Gross, began by putting encouraging messages on everyone’s locker.
According to Ibraham Hamed, “The students felt confident in facing the day after receiving a positive message.” They are currently giving statistics on the news everyday. Also teachers are giving out kindness stickers to students if they do something kind for others and they will get a reward. If anyone has any questions about the Kindness Committee you may ask Mr. Gross for further information. Remember to be kind!

Making our Mark
by Erica Boyd
Students in South Charlotte are doing their part to make their school and society better and cleaner in and outside of school. Several students talked about what they’re doing to make their mark on the world, and the results were pretty satisfying. The students were asked to answer the questions as honestly as possible, so here were the results:
Out of the 18 students interviewed, 13 were doing at least small acts to improve our society. Four students said that they would most likely pick up trash that they see in their school or society.
Two people said they volunteer or do community service with their church.
One person said they’d like to volunteer but haven’t yet found the opportunity.
Three of the students said that they would stand up to a bully if they saws someone being harassed.
One student stated that they say hello to people in the halls to brighten their day. Another student said she volunteers with her girl scout troup. One of the most impressive results was that one student volunteers by choice at a nursing home.
Though students doing a good job to improve the world around them, there is so much more they can do. So next time you see a piece of trash, or someone being made fun of, or someone who just looks like they could use a little pick-me-up, make sure you do the right thing!

Dylan Brackis, an eighth grade student at South Charlotte Middle School says, “I am very happy for this. It will be an awesome experience and I could not be more exhilarated to witness art at its finest at Ovens Auditorium."
This is a milestone field trip for South Charlotte. Ovens is the epitome of fine arts in Charlotte NC, USA. It brings me such blithe to know that South Charlotte Middle School has come together to administer such a prodigious field trip!” If any eighth graders are planning on coming you will need to pay twenty dollars by October 23 and bring a lunch or buy one from the cafeteria.

Most Popular Candies
By: Bayleigh H and Hailey C
Halloween is just around the corner and most dentists are not very happy about this, but of course the trick-or-treaters are super excited. Peoples' favorite candies range from sweet to sour, just like Swedish Fish to Sour Patch Kids. Everyone obviously has their favorite candy, but do you know what your state's favorite candy is? The top two favorite candies throughout the U.S. are candy corn and Reese's. North Carolina’s favorite candy is Butterfinger and South Carolina’s favorite candy is candy corn. Happy Halloween and make sure to be safe!

Halloween Candy Grams
By: Anna Barnett
This week South Charlotte’s National Juniors Honor Society is selling candy grams to students, which is where the students can buy a candy and send it with a note to someone. The students can send the notes anonymously or with their name attached. NJHS is selling them to celebrate Halloween! The cost is $2.00 for one candy gram and $3.50 for two. Candy grams are going to be sold Monday, October 26 to Thursday, October 30 and will be delivered to students during ninth block!

I’m a mighty shocker don’t mess with me!

This week is spirit week at South Charlotte Middle School. Students all over the campus are gearing up to support their school in five different ways. Monday’s theme was “Multiple Day”. Students were encouraged to find one or more friends and wear a similar outfit. One class even wore a “One Hundred And One Dalmatians” inspired group outfit. Every student in the class wore a dalmatian outfit except for the one student who wore a Cruella De Vil costume. Tuesday was wacky- tacky day! Students wore their most creative, colorful, non- matching outfits. There were many great costumes, but Melissa Bak and Emily Debe were two students who really stood out. Wednesday was sports wear. One student, Avery Rising, had a spectacular outfit, topped off with a cape, a boa, face paint, a jersey, and knee high socks! Thursday is school spirit day, and Friday is character day. Everyone’s doing their part to support the school!
