Technology Takeover
By Rachel W.
New technology is creating many anxious thoughts among factory workers and many other jobs. There is a constant increase in many company's request and need for electronics. This is a positive development because technology can improve businesses, but it is also costing many workers their jobs. People who used to have full time jobs find themselves with only a part time job, or even workless. For example, if a new machine was built that could take down someone’s order by itself, many waiters and waitresses would lose their jobs. This type of problem has been occurring with factory workers, which has resulted in much outrage.
In order to solve this problem, government job training programs must be strengthened. It has been found that one third of employers worldwide claim they are unable to find workers with the right skills for job openings. This shows that workers need to be trained according to what job openings there are. If this happens, then the number of unemployed workers will decrease greatly. Since technology is taking over the work force, people need to train for jobs accordingly, in order for them to find a job.

Hoverboards Catching on Fire
By Chance S.
The new hoverboards, or by it’s actual name the “IO Hawk” are all the rage right now, thanks to the 1987 movie “Back to the Future Part II." In the movie, Marty McFly rides a hoverboard, a skateboard that hovers in mid air. The IO Hawks have a major flaw, they have spontaneously burst into flames, on more than one occasion. An abundance of videos have surfaced in which the hoverboards caught on fire. A recent fire nearly burned down a house in Australia. The cause is the lithium ion batteries. They can easily catch on fire or explode. Some injuries have been reported.

Ice Melting to Change
By Rachel W.
Many animals have been showing up in places they don’t belong because of climate change. For example, someone might find a species in the Atlantic Ocean that actually lives in the Pacific Ocean. Scientists have found the reason for this occurrence is because of melting ice. The climate has increasingly grown warmer, causing sea ice to melt. This creates a passage for animals to go through, meaning that they travel to unfamiliar places. Animals become confused in an area they are not used to being in. Many marine animals are being found in places where they don’t belong, and where they might not be able to survive in.
After careful studying, the gathered information showed that this new development could risk the lives of many different types of species. When animals travel to unknown locations, it is very common that they find themselves in a situation where they do not know what to do. This means it is troubling for them to survive. They are not familiar with the area or the other animals in it. Another problem that occurred is the changing of a species genetic makeup. Simply putting it, this is how the animal is made up. When mixed with other species, it changes their genetic makeup, creating a different version. This creates the loss of some types of animals, which could take a turn for the worse.

Christmas Traditions
By Rachel W.
The most wonderful time of the year is here! All around the world, people celebrate Christmas, but with many various types of traditions. Out of these traditions, the most popular ones include decorating a Christmas tree, hanging stockings on the fireplace for Santa Claus to come, and eating candy canes, as well as decorating with them.
Christmas trees are found everywhere during the holiday season. It is very common for someone to buy one, whether it be real or fake, and put it up in their house. They then decorate it with fun ornaments and other decorations, and leave it up until Christmas is over!
Many people hang stockings up on the fireplace for Santa Claus to come. Santa comes down through the chimney and fills these Christmas stockings with toys and goodies. Kids from all over the globe hang up their stockings on Christmas Eve, ready to wake up in the morning to find them filled with presents!
Candy canes are also very common in the Christmas season. These red and white sweet sticks are not only bought for eating, but also for decorating. They can be found all over someone's house or on someone’s Christmas tree. Candy canes are sweet to eat and great to decorate with!
Christmas is celebrated all over the world in many different ways! All in all, the most common traditions are decorating a Christmas tree, hanging stockings on the fireplace for Santa Claus to come and fill them up with gifts, and eating candy canes, as well as decorating with them. Have a great break! Merry Christmas!

Whales are getting Caught in Fishing Gear
By Ivania M.
California is working on to solve a growing problem, whales are getting caught in fishing gear. On Long Beach California, the waters of the Pacific Ocean are unusually warm this year. The change in weather might be bad news for whales, who swim through the waters off California when they migrate. Many of them are now colliding with fisherman. This year, more than 60 whales have been entangled in fishing gear. Thats is more than 400 percent over normal.
Scientists believe that the whales may be following prey closer to shore as warm water influences feeding patterns. This puts them closer to fisherman, crabbers, and lobstermen. This situation is so serious that the crab fishery has begun closely with state and federal agencies and environmental groups. Together they are trying to figure out where and how the whales are running into their gear. The ocean mammals also have become entangled in fishing nets and lobster gear, but authorities have identified crab fishing as the most urgent concern.

Record Highs in December
By Casey D.
There has been record highs all over the east part of the United States. In Raleigh, North Carolina on Wednesday the forecast high was 11 degrees above normal. There has been more than 1,900 daily records all over the east in December. When it is supposed to be getting cold the spring fever keeps continuing. As people are traveling for the holidays they won’t be experiencing much cold as the temperatures stay high.

Dolphins, Humans, and Mercury
By Rachel W.
The mercury levels in dolphins say quite a bit about the mercury levels in humans. Researchers have found a loop between marine mammal life and human life. Both consume seafood, and if they live close to each other, they consume the same type of fish. This is extremely helpful for human and marine health. For example, if a scientist found that dolphins in a specific area had high levels of mercury, they would know that the fish the dolphins were eating had increased levels of mercury. This means that the people living in the same area as the dolphins could be warned to not eat any seafood until the mercury levels in the fish they were eating decreased.
Mercury is a very toxic and dangerous substance. Exposures of this at high levels can harm the brain, heart, kidney, lungs, and immune system. The discovery tying human health and marine mammal health could keep both safe from these very harsh effects that mercury causes. Scientists are currently working on finding more health issues like mercury levels, so they can protect more marine life and more human life. This realization has inspired people to look for more like it. Much more can be found, leading to a great future for all living thing’s health.

Time Is Running Out For The Santa Monica Lions
By Samantha P.
The Santa Monica Lions population has been decreasing rapidly. These lions, especially males, are jumping over highways to get to other lions. Unfortunately, most that attempt to make it across die from getting hit by cars. A single adult home range can cover more than 300 square miles. There is simply not enough land for each of these lions. Therefore, the lions are jumping highways to get to new territory and find mates. One solution is to build a safe crossing at Liberty Canyon in an undeveloped stretch of 101, near Augoura Hills. However, this plan is very expensive, and by the time it has been completed, the lions would already be extinct. There is not much time left to act. Soon, it will be all over for the Santa Monica Lions.

Black Friday &Y Cyber Monday's Outcome of 2015
By: Ivania M.
This year's annual Black Friday and Cyber Monday was a knock out. Retailers said that more people shopped online than actually driving to the brick-walled stores. Many retailers across Great Britain are attempting to dial back discounts to end Black Friday mania, following past year's incidents in which adopted American shopping tradition turn ugly. Some stores announce that they will stay closed on Thanksgiving and even Black Friday, taking stand against annual sales frenzy. Other stores choose to open because of competition.
It was not as hectic during Cyber Monday in comparison to Black Friday. Stores like Walmart were half filled with customers during Black Friday. There weren’t much sales for items because all of the merchandise was sold the earlier that day and the day before. The items that were on the leftover shelves from earlier were at an even lower price than what they had been! 2015's Black Friday and Cyber Monday were a good hit.

Perfect Becoming Our Reality
By Rachel W.
Scientists are close to a scientific breakthrough. Whether or not this breakthrough will take a turn for the good or for the worse is still undecided. David Baltimore, currently a scientist and a Nobel prize winner, states, “We are close to be being able to alter human heredity.” This fact is indeed true, but the decision on whether or not these “enhancements” will be beneficial hasn’t yet been made. For those who do not know, gene editing is a process in which a body’s collection of genes is tweaked through additions, subtractions or alterations. There are many possible positive and negative impacts that could occur if scientists truly are able to change human genes.
These so called enhancements could be beneficial or/and disastrous to society. For example, if a person’s family has a history of breast cancer, these genes could be edited out. Or tweaking the DEC2 gene could allow someone to function on only a few hours of sleep, which would be great for soldiers. But there are some downsides to these enhancements. People could abuse this life saver by making someone look flawless, or have them be the ultimate singer or athlete. Mankind could become a so called “perfect” society, where everyone would look the same and act the same. It would be a society where everyone and everything in it is perfect.

Coming Face-To-Face With a Bear
By Rachel W.
Three Rivers, California has a population of 2,200 people, and a population of many bears! If someone drove through this town, they may find a bear on the roof of someone’s house, or standing near a gas station. This species is located in Three Rivers for the reason that there has been a lack of rain, causing a drought. This drought has driven the bears down from their mountain homes in hope to find food, because their supply has dried up. They come to town for something to fill their stomachs for the long and cold winter up in the mountains.
Bears are a type of animal that hibernates for each and every winter, so they must get a large filling of food before they go to sleep. They are searching for food in this California town, so a resident might find a bear sniffing around their neighborhood while drinking coffee on their porch, or see one up in a tree. One of the major problems this causes, is that it makes some people feel their safety his being compromised. There have been some reports of illegal bear shootings, even though no evidence other than hearing a gunshot have been found.
The biggest challenge for the bears to survive may not be the reason of gun shootings. David Graber states, “If they don’t hibernate, they’re going to die. That’s a rare, uncommon event.” The biggest problem for the bears to face is the situation in which if they don’t pack their bodies with enough food, they can’t go up to the mountains to hibernate. If these bears don’t hibernate, they will die. This event hardly ever occurs, and when it does, it is a big deal. The bears’ only hope is to find enough food in the small California town of Three Rivers, so they will be able to survive hibernation.

Three White Rhinos Left
Samantha P.
There are currently only three rare white rhinos on Earth after the 4th rhino was put to sleep by the San Diego Zoo. Nola, the 4th rhino, was 41 years old and apparently had bad health. When her health became worse as time went on, the San Diego Zoo made the difficult decision of putting her to sleep. The northern white rhino once lived in many parts of Africa. They are one of the largest land animals. These rhinos can run up to 30 miles per hour and their horns, tough skin, and huge size means they have no natural predators. However, humans hunted them for their valuable horns. Their breed dramatically decreased from 2000 to 5 during civil wars and when their natural surroundings were destroyed. Unfortunately, all three rhinos are unable to reproduce leading to the fact that the rare white rhino will eventually render to be extinct. This is the heartbreaking reality that has occurred due to human abuse of nature.

Holiday Festivities Near Charlotte
By Rachel W.
This week, in many places near Charlotte, North Carolina, there are many holiday activities to participate in. Two of the many things to do at Christmas time include the Uptown Tree Lighting and ChristmasVille.
Charlotte’s official Christmas tree is lit on December 3rd, at the intersection of Trade and Tryon. This occasion is a very festive thing to participate in, and is free to attend. There is holiday treats such as cookies, hot chocolate, and apple cider. Anyone who goes is sure to have an amazing time!
Holiday spirit is spread throughout downtown Rock Hill, South Carolina December 3rd through December 6th. This is their 8th Annual ChristmasVille event, which is a great Christmas festivity to participate in. There are more than 70 individual events, which includes a parade, carolers, crafts, food, carriage rides, and Santa Claus. This occasion also includes other attractions such as mini golf, a rock climbing wall, a Ferris wheel, and pony rides. ChristmasVille is free to attend, but some events do charge for participation. A great attribute to this event is the fireworks show on December 5th, near the ChristmasVille Stages.
These two events are great Christmas time activities! Both are free, not including the extra charge for food and drinks, and some events in ChristmasVille. Overall, they are very good ideas to look into for Christmas fun!

Turkey Day
By Rachel W.
Thanksgiving is coming up on Thursday, November 26, 2015. This is a day countries all across the globe celebrate. Even though the Thanksgivings in countries differ from one another in some way, the overall moral is to be thankful for what someone has. Do not take anything for granted, is what people celebrate. It is commonly found that there is a feast of some sort to be grateful for what you have. In America, turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, rolls, and pecan and pumpkin pie are examples of food eaten on this day.
Schools across the country give kids around a week long break to participate in celebrations. Some facts about Thanksgiving is that it is always on the fourth Thursday of November, one of its nicknames is “Turkey Day”, and the Wishbone tradition. This tradition is where two people each take hold of one end of the “wishbone” of the turkey, make a wish, and pull. Whoever ends up with the larger part of the bone gets their wish! Have fun on Thanksgiving, and enjoy eating a feast!

The Paris Attacks
By Rachel W. and Samantha P.
Three teams of terrorists coordinated attacks at six locations throughout Paris, including a concert hall, the Stade de France and at least two restaurants. This occurred around 9:20 p.m. local time on Friday, the thirteenth of November, 2015. Around 129 people were killed, and around 352 people were injured. 99 of these people are in very critical condition. Most of the fatalities resulted from the shooting massacre at a rock concert in the center of the city. It was recorded that the band playing was the Eagles of Death Metal, at the Bataclan hall. Terrorists came out and started mass shooting people at the concert, in which many were injured or killed. It has been found that 6 of the 7 terrorists who were part of the orchestrated attacks have been killed. There remains 1 suspect in the attack on the loose. At this moment, there is a search being conducted looking for the person responsible for this tragedy.
Of course, there must be a reason how and why the terrorists from ISIS attacked Paris. Studies have shown that there are many Syrian refugees in Paris, France. This is a big reason how the attacks were made possible. It wasn’t hard to find a way into the city, because they were already in the city. That leads to the question of why the terrorists attacked the City Of Lights. Reasons are not known with complete certainty, but there are some that seem very reasonable. One of these is the fact that Paris has no weapons. Their laws are very strict, resulting in no citizen having any access to any weaponry. This meant that nobody could protect themselves when they were being attacked. This made Paris a very easy target to cause chaos in. Among other reasons out there, this one is the most reasonable of them.
Although this has been a tragic event, citizens of France are staying strong. A woman and her husband were interviewed in front of a theater that was open on Monday, three days after the attack. She said ,”We are sending the terrorists a message, all they want is for us too be afraid, but if they see that we can go through our everyday routine they will not have accomplished their goal.” Another man was interviewed and expressed his thoughts with the press ,“If we respond with violence, what good will we get out of it? We need to act with tolerance.” Paris is now working to secure their borders as well as calm the city and their citizens down. The city is working to take precautions to make sure that this terrible massacre will never happen again, to their city and to any other country or place in the world.

One Child Policy Lifted
by Ivania M.
A policy in China called “One Child Policy” has been recently removed. This policy's purpose was to reduce the growth rate of China’s growing population. The government did not want a higher population rate because their weak economy did not have the money nor resources to support a greater amount of people inhabiting China.
Between 1978 and 1980, it was introduced, and began to be formally phased out in 2015. This policy has certainly affected families with more than one child. In 2007, 36% of China's population was subject to a strict one-child restriction. An additional 53% of families were allowed to have a second child if the first child was a girl.
By the late 1970s, China’s population was rapidly approaching the one-billion mark. The country’s new leadership was headed by Deng Xiaoping. Xiaoping began to consider what had become a rapid population growth rate. The one-child policy was supported for most Chinese until the 21st century. In late 2015, Chinese officials announced that the program was ending. Starting in the early year of 2016, all families would be allowed to have two children.

Cursive Moving Along From Schools
by Rachel W.
Cursive handwriting, once considered a very important skillset, is slowly disappearing from schools around the world. These curlicue letters are not found as important as they once were, and could soon be eliminated from most public schools. Cursive is basically a faster way to write, which was commonly used as a note taking tool years ago. It is currently, not needed. This is because students are mainly taking notes on laptops, tablets, and computers. They are not normally found taking handwritten notes.
With lower school budgets, cursive seems especially non relevant, because educators have many other things to teach. Cursive writing is just one of the many things that is being replaced by technology, in which there are many different opinions on whether it should be removed or not. The majority of people with school related jobs believe cursive is not needed, but most parents feel that it is an important life skill that they want their child to learn. Adding up all of these problems, cursive will most likely be a thing in the past in schools if no one does anything about keeping it in schools.

Obama looks to reduce the number of standardized tests
by Samantha P.
Students, parents, and teachers have long complained about the amount of time kids spend taking standardized tests. Students spend anywhere from 20 to 25 hours on testing annually. A study showed that an average 8th grader spends about 2.3 percent of classroom time on testing. Students from preschool to 12th grade take about 112 exams required by the federal government.
“learning is so much more than just filling in the right bubble,” Obama says. Therefore the officials are hoping to stop unnecessary tests. Although the government is reducing unnecessary tests, they will be keeping the end of grade, or year, tests. The council found that the most test were required in 8th and 10th grade. 4 in 10 districts reported having to wait 2 months to four months before getting test results. Since the test results are late, teachers in the new school year begin without knowing whether a student is having difficulties.

Food Waste Welcomes World Hunger
by Rachel W.
Recent studies have shown that a quarter of all of the food in the world is lost every year. If this amount could be split in half, losing only an eighth of the food, a billion more people could be fed. To do this, inefficient harvesting, limited storage, and just plain wasting food would have to be decreased immensely. Much more still needs to be fixed but, over the last 25 years, 2 billion more people have been fed. This is a great amount of progress. The problem is keeping this progress up, to continue feeding more people in the world. Another problem is that each year, the world’s population increases greatly, creating more mouths to be fed. There has to be a cause for why a major part of the population is hungry. A large reason is that people who have access to food waste a good proportion of it. The average family wastes a quarter of their food annually. Do your part to end world hunger by wasting less food after your meal.

Trick or Treat!
by Rachel W.
Halloween is coming up this weekend on Saturday, October 31, 2015! This holiday is a time to dress up in any type of costume, whether it be a princess or a ghost, and go trick-or-treating. Not only people all across the US celebrate this day. Many other countries participate in Halloween by going trick or treating, carving jack-O-lanterns, and setting up decorations in front of their houses as well. Two things that someone may not know about Halloween is that the most popular costume is a witch, and the most popular trick-or-treat candy bought is Snickers! Studies have shown that trick or treating is a major important part of this holiday, because it creates the highest number of candy sales all year! Not only is this day a time for lots of fun, it is also a time for great business! Have a scaretastic time on Halloween!

Shark Attacks
by Rachel W.
Just over the summer of 2015, scientists have speculated that there has been an increase in the number of shark attacks that have occurred in North Carolina. There are many reasons that have been found, but two specific ones are mainly the cause of the attacks increasing more and more. One of them is the simple explanation that there is an ever growing amount of people spending time in the ocean. The second reason is more scientific. Strong currents have flown north along the coast, bringing bait fish, which attract sharks. These conditions appeared in April this year, causing the sharks to follow, because sharks eat bait fish. They came from Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. Be careful in the ocean, but make sure to have fun!

Deadly Fires Devastate California to Iowa to North Carolina
By: Ivania Mora-Olazo
There was a recent wildfire this year in the month of April that broke out on a tuesday afternoon in the Victor Valley of San Bernardino County. KNBC-tv said evacuations occurred in the city of Apple Valley.
A rash of wildland fires affected states from California to New York and continued on Thursday as dormant vegetation, windy weather and low humidity combined to create optimal conditions for those fires to spread quickly. A car and a shed were torched by the blaze, according to The Associated Press. By Wednesday night, all mandatory evacuations were lifted. Some 200 firefighters were working to calm the fire, which burned 185 acres and was 95 percent contained, AP also said. The wildfire started as a controlled burn. Unfortunately one person has died and another seriously injured in the blazes, which have torched homes in at least three states. In Iowa a firefighter suffered serious injuries while battling a large blaze in the Spirit Lake area Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to ExploreOkoboji.com. His name wasn't immediately made available by the fire department, the report added. A four-mile stretch of Interstate 80 near Durant in eastern Iowa was shut down Wednesday afternoon due to a grass fire. In North Carolina, a grass fire flared along a busy road in Winston-Salem Tuesday, according to WXII-TV. The Galena Fire Department has been busy battling grass fires, therefore conditions were extremely dry. We now know from experience that even just a small spark can turn into a devastating event.

Vacationing to Mars?
by Rachel W.
NASA is in the process of creating an action plan to land a person on Mars. A rover was placed on Mars in 2004, but no human has ever set foot on the red planet. Even though the launch date is planned for 2024, preparations are being made at this time. NASA will select the astronauts for this mission through many interviews, then will conduct group challenges to see how well people work together.
One big problem is constantly getting in their way: How will they pay for this extreme mission? They are raising money every way they can. Their efforts include broadcasting rights, sponsorship deals, crowd-funding, donations from philanthropists, and licensing intellectual property right from inventions made along the way. If NASA barrels through all of these complications and everything goes according to plan, they will have successfully established a colony on Mars. This will be a major accomplishment, since completing this mission is, literally, rocket science.

Hot Oceans Are Killing the Coral Reefs
by Samantha P.
For the past three years global warming has affected an abundance of areas of the world. One particular area that people don’t seem to pay as much attention to is the ocean. Corals have been increasingly pummeled by climate change. Other factors contribute to the decrease in population for corals, such as El Nino. El Nino is an irregularly complex series of climatic changes affecting the Pacific region by making them hot. As temperature rises, mass bleaching and infectious disease outbreaks are more likely to become frequent. Climate change has affected above and below water, but the ever-rising temperatures are why coral reefs are dying. About 4,600 square miles worth of corals in the Atlantic, Indian, and pacific oceans have vanished. It is our duty to help save the coral reefs. Help our coral reefs by instead of taking a car, take the public bus or ride a bicycle. A small contribution can go a long way.

Are Police Cars Risking People's Lives?
by Ivania M.
Police cars may be risking people’s lives because many new police cars do not have the familiar siren fitted to them due to budget cuts. The lack of sirens does not allow the police to exceed the speed limit because of the possible danger they could pose to the public. It could be causing police drivers to drive more slowly which possesses a risk to the public, according to the police federation in the West Midlands. According to this professional body, criminals are possibly being allowed to get away with a crime because the police can not get to them quickly enough.
The cars the officers are using are not fitted with sirens, although they do have blue lights. The means that police officers cannot break the speed limit or perform other maneuvers, which are normally permitted by police cars responding to emergency calls, which include crossing, running a red light or driving on the wrong side of the road.
The Police Federation is furthering budget cuts with the West Midland force having to get rid of their more expensive Astra models and downgrade to the cheaper Corsa. These cars are being increasingly used to attend incidents that require rapid response. This however does not explain why these cars could not be fitted with sirens, particularly with the money saved by downgrading to a cheaper car. West Midlands Police Federation said it had compiled more than 100 reports in the past year of officers attending urgent matters in the controversial Corsa hatchbacks. The government should provide police stations cars that have sirens. This would work properly so the public doesn’t have any chances of being in danger or getting hurt from criminals escaping the police.

Earthquake Shakes India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan
By Rachel W
A 7.5 magnitude earthquake shook India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan on October 26, 2015. It caused cut power and communications in some areas, and killed at least 150 people. It’s quakes occurred mainly in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but sent some shocks to parts of India. Overall, the earthquake was felt all across all three countries. In Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, people panicked and ran into the streets when the buildings shook. In the Afghan capital, Kabul, tremors were only felt for around 45 seconds, but yet walls cracked and cars rolled into the street in that seemingly short amount of time. More than 1,500 houses total were either partially or fully destroyed in the earthquake. Helicopters swooped in to reach the most remote of villages hit. Overall, the earthquake caused much destruction and many deaths, but many helped to save lives that were on the line, and helped salvage all that they could.

National Candy Day
Anna Barnett
Who is excited for national candy day? It will be on Wednesday, November 4. It is celebrated all over the country. Most people usually get candy and post #nationalcandyday on social media. This holiday is not only celebrated by kids. Americans over the age of 18 eat about 65% of all the candy produced each year.
According to nationaldaycalendar.com “It was in the late 13th century that the Middle English word candy began to be used, coming into English from the Old French cucre candi, derived in turn from Persian Qand and Qandi, “cane sugar”.
